Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the transportation department is pulling back $4 billion in federal funding for California’s high-speed rail project. The department has concluded there isn’t a clear way forward for the project and is even thinking about reclaiming more funds.
A recent report from the Federal Railroad Administration highlighted several issues, such as missed deadlines and budget problems. One major concern is that California hasn’t secured an additional $7 billion needed for the first 171-mile segment, which would connect Merced and Bakersfield.
The planned California high-speed rail system aims to cover 800 miles, reaching speeds of up to 220 mph. It is intended to connect San Francisco with Los Angeles and later expand to Sacramento and San Diego. The California High-Speed Rail Authority strongly disagrees with the administration’s assessment, claiming it overlooks the progress made on the project.
Californians approved $10 billion in funding for this rail system back in 2008. Initially, the project was expected to cost around $33 billion and be completed by 2020. However, estimates have skyrocketed to between $89 billion and $128 billion. In 2021, President Biden reinstated a $929 million grant that Trump had previously cut, calling the project a “disaster.”
Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a budget that allocates at least $1 billion each year for the next two decades to ensure the project can move forward. Meanwhile, construction is actively taking place along 119 miles in California’s Central Valley.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the project, labeling it a case of government incompetence and suggesting corruption. In response, Newsom took to social media, quipping, “Won’t be taking advice from the guy who can’t keep planes in the sky.”
Public sentiment remains divided. Many individuals, particularly supporters of high-speed rail, express frustration over the rising costs and delays. In contrast, critics argue that the project is mismanaged and unsustainable.
As this saga continues, it’s clear that California’s high-speed rail project will be a focus of debate for the foreseeable future. Whether it can overcome these obstacles remains to be seen.
