WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump recently shared an interesting idea about saving money for Americans. At an investment conference in Miami, he talked about potentially giving back 20% of the savings from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, directly to U.S. citizens.

This plan also includes putting another 20% towards reducing the national debt. Trump believes that a dividend payment could motivate people to report any wasteful spending they notice.
“They’ll be reporting it themselves,” he said. “They participate in the process of saving us money.” Later, while returning to Washington on Air Force One, he was asked about Musk’s proposal. Trump responded enthusiastically, saying, “I love it.”
The day before, Musk had hinted at this idea on his social media platform. He mentioned he would reach out to the President regarding the suggestion of a “DOGE Dividend.” This dividend would refund taxpayers a portion of the savings made from government efficiency efforts, which have already led to many federal employees being let go.
