President Trump signed new executive orders focusing on school choice and addressing what he calls “radical indoctrination” in K-12 education. This move follows his campaign promises to change how American education operates.
One key order asks the U.S. Education Department to provide guidance on how states can use federal funds to support school choice programs within the next two months. Meanwhile, Trump’s nominee for Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, a former WWE executive, has yet to be confirmed.
The orders also emphasize prioritizing educational freedom in discretionary grant programs. Trump has directed the Department of Health and Human Services to explore how states can utilize block grants to boost educational options. This includes supporting families who want to choose private or faith-based schools instead of public ones.
In addition, Trump instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to find ways for military families to use Department of Defense funds to attend preferred schools. Similar guidance is expected from the Department of the Interior regarding schools within the Bureau of Indian Education.
Another significant order aims to eliminate federal funding for schools that promote what the administration calls “discriminatory equity ideology.” Trump believes this approach damages individual merit and promotes unfair generalizations. He is requiring an “ending indoctrination strategy” from the secretaries of Education, Defense, and Health and Human Services within 90 days.
Lastly, Trump also took steps to fight antisemitism on college campuses, highlighting a broader intent to reshape education in the U.S.
