Trump’s Search for Air Force One Alternatives
President Donald Trump recently mentioned he might buy used Boeing planes for Air Force One. This comes after delays from Boeing in delivering two new modified jets. Speaking to reporters while on an older Boeing 747, Trump expressed frustration, stating, “We’re looking at alternatives, because it’s taking Boeing too long.”
He confirmed that he may consider purchasing a second-hand Boeing aircraft but has ruled out any planes from Airbus, saying, “I would not consider Airbus.” Trump is open to buying from overseas sellers to find a suitable replacement.
Boeing has been tasked with updating the planes, based on the Boeing 747-8 model. However, delivery has been delayed, partly due to the extensive modifications needed to meet presidential travel requirements. These include specialized security, communications equipment, and the capacity to function in various challenging environments.
Originally, the new planes were set to arrive by 2024, but the timeline has been pushed back to 2027 and 2028 for the first and second planes, respectively. This means that Trump may still be in office when the second plane is delivered.
Recently, Trump toured a newer Boeing 747-800 to inspect its technology and features. This visit was meant to emphasize the delay in his current presidential aircraft. The specific plane he saw was previously owned by the Qatari royal family.
In short, the search for an effective and timely Air Force One solution continues, with Trump exploring various options to ensure he has what he needs without having to wait on Boeing’s timeline.
