Trump Greenlights New York Offshore Wind Project Following Gas Pipeline Agreement with State

Norwegian energy firm Equinor is set to restart work on its offshore wind farm in New York, now that a halt ordered by the previous administration has been lifted. This project, known as Empire Wind 1, is groundbreaking as it will be the first offshore wind development to supply electricity directly to New York City.

Originally, work was paused in April 2024 when the Interior Secretary claimed the project was approved too quickly without proper analysis. This created uncertainty among investors, with concerns about potential impacts on other wind projects. However, after discussions between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and officials from the Biden administration, the stop-work order was removed. Hochul emphasized the project’s importance for job creation, stating that it supports 1,500 union jobs.

Equinor plans to make up for lost time this year, aiming to start commercial operations by 2027. Their investment in the project has reached $2.5 billion, and they envision constructing 54 massive turbines, each towering 910 feet high. Together, these turbines will generate 810 megawatts of electricity—enough to power around half a million homes.

Interestingly, the conversation around the Empire Wind project overlaps with broader energy discussions. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum mentioned that expanding natural gas pipeline capacity could provide significant economic benefits and lower utility costs for residents in New York and New England. Despite this, Hochul’s statement did not address natural gas, underscoring New York’s historical reluctance towards new pipelines.

Former President Trump has long criticized wind energy, contending it harms wildlife and is economically unviable. His administration had even imposed an executive order halting new offshore leases. However, amid the growing push for renewable energy, the landscape is changing. Successive approvals for wind projects like Empire Wind indicate a shift toward embracing sustainable sources.
