A Trump administration official has recently referred New York Attorney General Letitia James to federal prosecutors in Miami and Chicago for potential homeowner’s insurance fraud. This follows allegations that James submitted false information on her insurance applications.
Bill Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, sent a letter to prosecutors in Florida detailing these claims. James reportedly misrepresented information to Universal Property Insurance, based in Fort Lauderdale.
This isn’t the first time legal actions have been taken against James. She has been a long-time critic of Trump. In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned her referral for alleged insurance fraud.
Pulte also sent a similar referral to the U.S. Attorney for Northern Illinois, claiming James might have provided incorrect details while applying to Allstate as well.
James’ lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has dismissed these allegations as attempts at political revenge. He argues that these tactics are desperate and will not succeed. “This is petty political payback,” he said.
Last fall, James faced separate charges related to bank fraud, where she was accused of misrepresenting information about a property in Virginia. Those charges were dismissed, but they followed earlier referrals from Pulte regarding possible mortgage fraud.
Historically, James has taken significant legal actions against Trump, claiming he exaggerated the value of his assets. A New York judge held Trump liable for fraud, although an appellate court later overturned the financial judgment.
Furthermore, Pulte’s attempts to target James have sparked controversy, with James’s lawyers accusing him of weaponizing his office against political opponents. Amid heightened tensions, it was reported that Pulte has sought protective measures due to threats related to this case.
In recent months, investigators have expanded their focus to look into financial transactions involving James and her longtime hairdresser. The inquiry is being led by U.S. Attorneys in Louisiana and New York.
This ongoing saga illustrates how politics and law can intertwine, reflecting deep divisions in American political life. Whether these allegations will lead to further legal consequences for James remains uncertain, but it highlights the intense scrutiny public figures often face in a highly charged political environment.
