Trump Proposes Bold Plan to Eliminate the Department of Education: What It Means for American Schools

Recently, President Donald Trump expressed his desire to close the U.S. Department of Education through an executive order. He stated, “We spend more per pupil than any other country, yet we rank very poorly in education.” His goal is to allow states more control over their schools.

Trump mentioned plans to collaborate with Congress and teachers’ unions to implement these changes. A White House official noted that steps to defund the department could be announced soon, possibly later in February.

This initiative may align with Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk. The aim is to pinpoint and eliminate wasteful government spending.

Republicans have criticized the Education Department’s actions under President Biden, especially concerning student loan forgiveness and diversity programs. Trump has already taken steps to dismantle such programs, and recent reports indicated that several Department of Education employees were placed on administrative leave.
