A senior White House official mentioned it’s possible to have all three leaders come together. Initially, Trump has expressed a preference to start with Putin, stating he hopes for a trilateral meeting later on.
Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian businessman close to Putin, also confirmed the meeting on social media. He suggested that the U.S. and Russia could collaborate on environmental and energy issues, indicating a broader agenda beyond just the war in Ukraine.
This meeting comes at a critical time. Trump is urging Putin to agree to a ceasefire deal with Ukraine. It would mark the first in-person discussion between U.S. and Russian leaders since Joe Biden met with Putin in June 2021, prior to Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine.
Trump has set a deadline of August 8 for Putin to agree to a ceasefire or risk facing severe sanctions. These could include new tariffs on countries that continue to do business with Russia. Recently, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, among other sanctions tied to Russia’s actions.
Trump has shown frustration over the ongoing conflict, mentioning that his recent calls with Putin have not met his expectations. The Trump administration’s approach seems to be shifting, as a recent meeting between Trump’s envoy and Putin was described as “very productive,” signaling a potential thaw in relations.
