U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced what he called the “largest deal ever” with Japan. This agreement introduces a 15% reciprocal tariff on Japanese exports to the U.S. Trump mentioned that Japan plans to invest $550 billion in the U.S., promising that America will “receive 90% of the profits.”

In exchange, Japan will allow more trade, including cars, trucks, rice, and various agricultural products. According to Trump, this deal could create “hundreds of thousands of jobs” in the U.S.

Surprisingly, a year ago, such high tariffs would have seemed alarming. Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management, shared that today’s reaction is more one of relief. Just earlier this month, Trump had hinted at increasing the tariff to 25% on Japanese exports, signaling a tough negotiation strategy.

Japanese automobiles are essential to the country’s economy, representing 28.3% of all exports in 2024, as noted by recent customs data.

This announcement follows a challenging time for Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, whose coalition lost its majority in the upper house elections. This political shift has raised concerns about Japan’s bargaining power in negotiations. While Ishiba plans to stay on as Prime Minister, he may reconsider based on how these tariff talks progress.
