A recent analysis reveals that much of the online criticism surrounding Operation Epic Fury may not stem from American voices. Instead, researchers found a significant amount of this backlash is originating from accounts based outside the U.S.
The report, conducted by Argyle Consulting Group, highlights how these foreign accounts frequently pushed narratives that portrayed the military action as a “betrayal of MAGA” and “unpopular with Americans.” They often masqueraded as American users, complicating the detection of their true origin.
For instance, 60% of the most popular tweets mentioning “Iran” during the operation’s early days came from non-U.S. accounts. This misleading tactic makes it challenging for average social media users to spot the difference.
Eran Vasker, CEO of Argyle, noted, “These aren’t just random opinions. We’re seeing discourse that feels American—it’s in English and uses U.S. political language—but it’s from abroad.” This clever mimicry taps into domestic political sentiments, making the content more relatable and persuasive.
The analysis reviewed over 100 viral posts that each gained more than 10,000 shares from February 28 to March 7. Posts involving “Iran” amassed a staggering 98 million mentions and had an estimated reach of 1.5 trillion views, marking one of the largest online events in recent memory. Foreign accounts alone contributed to 155.6 million views—more than 60 million above their American counterparts.
Interestingly, all negative posts in this analysis came from foreign accounts, while only U.S.-based users showed support for the operation. This highlights a worrying trend where foreign influence may shape public opinion through strategic online engagement.
