The White House has announced plans for an impressive new ballroom, set to break ground in September. This $200 million project aims to be finished before President Donald Trump’s term wraps up in early 2029.

This ballroom will mark the first significant change to the White House’s structure since the Truman balcony was added in 1948. Trump has been vocal about the need for a larger venue, arguing that hosting state dinners in tents on the lawn isn’t ideal. Currently, the East Room can hold around 200 guests, which limits larger gatherings.

Trump emphasized that the ballroom will respect the historic architecture of the mansion. He stated that it will be adjacent to the existing building but will not connect to it. “I’m a big fan of the White House, and I think it’s beautiful as it is,” he said.

The new ballroom, with a seating capacity of 650, will replace the East Wing’s current layout, which houses the First Lady’s office. The offices will be temporarily moved during construction, which will also update and modernize the wing, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Funding for this ambitious project will reportedly come from Trump and private donors, although specific names have not been disclosed. As for the architectural side, McCrery Architects will lead the design, with construction managed by Clark Construction and engineering by AECOM.

Interestingly, this isn’t Trump’s only renovation plan. He has expressed the desire to restore the Lincoln Bedroom’s bathroom to its original 19th-century style, claiming the current design is less than satisfactory.

Historically, the idea of having a ballroom at the White House is not new; it has been discussed for over 150 years. Many previous presidents have considered the idea but never moved forward with it. This makes Trump’s commitment noteworthy, as he positions himself as a builder with a keen eye for detail.
