President Donald Trump recently met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Turnberry, Scotland, where he addressed ongoing tensions with Russia. His main focus was on the war in Ukraine and the need for Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate peace.
Trump shortened Putin’s deadline for reaching an agreement from 50 days to just 10 or 12. He expressed frustration, saying, “I’m disappointed in President Putin.” Trump noted that progress seemed stalled, stating, “If you know what the answer is going to be, why wait?”
In his remarks, Trump mentioned that, despite having what he believed were agreements in previous talks, the situation remains dire, particularly with reports of civilian casualties in Ukraine. He emphasized that Russia’s military actions contradict any claims of willingness for peace.
Alongside announcing the new deadline, Trump hinted at potential sanctions and secondary tariffs for countries trading with Russia if no agreement is reached. This follows his earlier warning that Russia would face a 100% tariff on exports without a ceasefire by early September.
Trump’s evolving stance on Putin marks a significant shift from his previous reluctance to criticize him. Recent military escalations by Russia seem to have sparked this more direct approach.
In a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, public opinion in the U.S. shows increasing support for taking a tougher stance against Russia as the war continues. Around 70% of Americans believe the U.S. should support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty.
