President Donald Trump has expressed a desire for the new Washington Commanders stadium, valued at $3.7 billion, to bear his name. Reports from various sources indicate that there have been informal discussions between Trump’s team and an owner of the Commanders, led by Josh Harris. The stadium is set to rise on the former RFK Stadium site, where the team played from 1961 to 1996.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked that naming the stadium after Trump would be fitting, crediting him with making the stadium’s rebuilding possible. When asked for more details, she remained tight-lipped but affirmed the President’s wish.
The Commanders’ spokesperson declined to comment. However, a team insider noted that preparations are underway for Trump’s attendance at an upcoming game against the Detroit Lions, where he will honor military veterans during halftime.
While the Commanders hold the rights to name the new stadium, some crucial decisions will involve the District of Columbia Council and the National Park Service, as the land belongs to the federal government. A source explained that the team can’t independently decide on a name; they must collaborate with city officials.
In April, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the construction of the new stadium, expected to open in 2030. A significant concern remains regarding the team name, as Trump has previously insisted that the team revert to its former name, the Redskins, which has drawn controversy over its offensive nature to some Native American communities. The current Commanders name was adopted in 2020.
The D.C. Council voted overwhelmingly to move forward with the RFK Stadium project, paving the way for a massive 65,000-seat facility complete with housing and retail developments. Mayor Bowser has referred to this initiative as the largest economic project in the city’s history.
Naming rights for NFL stadiums have become a lucrative venture, with teams often partnering with corporations for these naming deals. Examples include Empower Field in Denver and GEHA Field in Kansas City. However, iconic venues like Lambeau Field and Soldier Field have maintained traditional names.
