CHEYENNE, Wyo. – President Donald Trump is focusing on copper as a key part of his plan to boost the U.S. mining industry. This metal is vital for many modern technologies, and the call to enhance domestic copper production aligns with his broader goals for American resources.

Trump’s recent executive order aims to investigate the national security risks tied to copper imports and considers tariffs to protect U.S. interests. The order highlights that although the U.S. has significant copper reserves, its capabilities to smelt and refine this metal are falling behind other countries.

This initiative could pave the way for new mining projects, which raises concerns among environmental groups. One example is the Twin Metals project in Minnesota, located in a treasured wilderness area. Critics argue that sacrificing the environment for copper production is unnecessary and risky.

Copper is essential for various applications, like rechargeable batteries, cellphones, and electrical systems. Debra Struhsacker, a consultant in the mining industry, emphasizes its importance, stating, “Copper is indispensable for electricity.” With growing demand due to the rise of renewable energy and electric vehicles, the need for copper is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.

In 2024, the U.S. produced about 1.1 million tons of copper, exporting a portion of it while relying on imports for the refined metal. Most of these imports come from Chile, which is the top producer globally.
