Trump’s Bold Plan: Could Cutting the Department of Education Be on the Table?

President Donald Trump is considering getting rid of the Department of Education as part of his plan to cut government expenses. There’s talk about an executive order to potentially shut down the agency, though it’s unclear if he can do this on his own.

The involvement of Elon Musk’s Government Efficiency department in this process hints at a major change ahead. Al Lujan, Vice Chairman of the El Paso GOP, supports the idea. He believes that people should look closely at how government money is spent. “We want to ensure those who should be receiving government benefits truly get them,” he said. Lujan thinks cutting the Department of Education could save taxpayers money and give more control back to the states. He praised Musk for his ability to streamline operations, saying he’s good at “cutting the fat and making things work better with fewer resources.”

However, this potential move raises concerns for students who depend on federal loans and grants. Brianna Carrillo, a University of Texas at El Paso student, shared her worries. “It’s a big concern for me since my school funding relies on it,” she explained. She feels disconnected from the politicians making these decisions, questioning how they can truly understand what students need. “They don’t live in the same world as us, so how can they know what’s best?”

Democratic Congresswoman Veronica Escobar from El Paso is also worried about this plan. She, along with other Democrats, tried to access the Department of Education to learn more about the proposed cuts but were stopped by security. Escobar believes this initiative is less about saving money and more about defunding essential services. “They want to weaken our institutions and harm families just to benefit themselves,” she argued.

The White House is still working on the details of the executive order, and more information is expected soon.
