Various officials, including those from the White House and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, have yet to comment.
Trump’s claims included that Canada owns both sides of the bridge and that it was built “with virtually no U.S. content,” which has been challenged. The Gordie Howe bridge, valued at over $4 billion, is fully funded by Canada but will be jointly owned by the Canadian government and Michigan. A 2012 agreement confirms that materials for construction must be sourced from either country, ensuring equal treatment.
Windsor’s Mayor Drew Dilkens expressed disbelief at Trump’s baseless assertions, emphasizing that U.S. steel was indeed used on the Michigan side of the project. This situation reflects a growing tension in U.S.-Canada relations, heightened recently when Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at an international summit encouraging collaboration among middle powers against superpowers like the U.S.
Earlier this year, Trump threatened to decertify Canadian aircraft and even mentioned implementing hefty tariffs on Canadian exports if certain trade agreements with China went through. These remarks come as Canada is easing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, allowing more imports, a move that worries U.S. officials.
The Gordie Howe bridge was previously touted by Trump as a vital economic link between the two nations. In a joint statement back in 2017 with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, it was celebrated for its potential to strengthen trade.
Currently, as the U.S. and Canada approach a review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA, the bridge’s future remains uncertain. As Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin noted, any cancellation of the project could have “serious repercussions” for Michigan’s economy. Slotkin emphasized that Canada should be viewed as a friend, not an enemy.
