Trump’s Education Secretary Nominee: Congress is Essential to Prevent Shutdown of the Education Department

During a recent confirmation hearing for President Trump’s education secretary nominee, Linda McMahon, the session faced many interruptions from protesters. Some lawmakers expressed frustration, with one Democratic senator calling the situation “very elegant gaslighting.”

McMahon, a billionaire and former wrestling executive, was questioned about various issues, including funding for low-income schools and school choice. Despite her contentious appearance, she is expected to be approved by the Republican-majority Senate.

She acknowledged that Trump cannot close the Department of Education without Congressional approval. McMahon stated, “We’d like to do this right,” emphasizing the need to work with Congress for any potential changes.

Sen. Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, supported McMahon, arguing that most challenges in education stem from federal regulations rather than funding. He mentioned that 10% of resources come from the federal government, while 80-90% of the rules suffocating performance come from Washington.

McMahon affirmed that financial support for schools, including Pell Grants, would remain intact under her leadership. When questioned about the potential impact of high-profile policy changes, she said, “That’s the law,” indicating her intention to honor existing programs.

Interestingly, McMahon also noted that members of Elon Musk’s government efficiency task force have been evaluating the Department of Education. Some lawmakers expressed concern about this task force’s role and its effect on educational programs.

Despite the turbulence during her confirmation hearing, McMahon’s statements suggest a commitment to maintaining support for vital educational initiatives, even as the department faces possible restructuring.
