Many Indian students in the US are dropping their part-time jobs right now. They need the money but fear being deported due to President Trump’s new immigration rules. This fear has grown since he took office again and issued orders to strengthen border security.
International students on F-1 visas can work 20 hours a week on campus, but many rely on off-campus jobs to pay for their living expenses. Arjun, a graduate student in Illinois, shared his experience. He worked at a cafe after classes, earning $7 an hour. It helped him cover his bills. But after hearing about possible immigration raids, he decided to quit. He said, “I can’t risk it, especially after borrowing $50,000 to study here.”
Neha, a master’s student in New York, feels the same way. She and her friends have chosen to stop working for now. “It’s tough,” she said. “We don’t want to risk losing our student visa status. My parents have sacrificed so much to send me here.”
With job losses, many students are turning to family for support. This financial burden can also affect their mental health, adding to their stress. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that India is ready to accept undocumented Indian nationals from the US, but the exact number of potential deportations is still unknown.
The situation remains uncertain, leaving students in a tough spot as they balance their studies with the fear of deportation.
