The Trump administration recently launched immigration enforcement operations in Maine, named “Operation Catch of the Day.” This move is seen as part of a broader political conflict between President Trump and Maine’s Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat.
On January 20, the Department of Homeland Security announced that officials had begun raids targeting individuals they labeled as high-risk offenders. A spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, criticized Governor Mills for supporting what she called “criminal illegal aliens” instead of protecting American citizens.
There’s speculation that Maine’s significant Somali American population—about 3,000 people—was a factor in their targeting. Local officials reacted strongly against the raids. Councilor Wesley Pelletier referred to them as part of a “war of terror” waged by the federal government. Reports indicate that ICE has already made about 50 arrests and identified nearly 1,400 individuals for potential detention in Maine.
