Threats against lawmakers are increasingly troubling. According to an assessment by the Capitol Police, threats have surged over the past few years. In 2024, they recorded nearly 9,500 concerning statements and direct threats against lawmakers, up from around 8,000 in 2023.
The Chicago Project on Security and Threats highlighted a stark rise in criminal threats during Donald Trump’s presidency, with reports revealing a 600% increase compared to Barack Obama’s second term. During Trump’s years, 148 charges were made, while only 21 were noted during the later Obama years. Interestingly, under President Joe Biden, the number of charged threats remained stable, totaling 140.
Historically, threats were predominantly aimed at Democrats from 2000 to 2012, but from 2013 onwards, the targets have been nearly evenly split across party lines. This shift highlights a growing climate of fear affecting a broader range of lawmakers.
Robert Pape, a professor at the University of Chicago and author of the aforementioned study, stated, “We are in a new era of political violence.” He points to recent incidents, including assassination attempts and firebombings, as evidence of this disturbing trend. NBC News polling indicates that many Americans now believe that heated political rhetoric plays a significant role in spurring violence, with around 61% attributing extreme political speech to a recent murder compared to just 24% who felt the same way about an earlier incident in 2011.
While the sources of these threats remain unclear, many Trump targets claim that his intense allegations against Democrats fuel the animosity. A White House spokeswoman emphasized that the president is concerned about political violence. She noted that as a survivor of assassination attempts, Trump understands the dangers involved.
Recently, Trump has accused several Democratic lawmakers of sedition, intensifying fears and resulting in a barrage of threats towards them shortly after his remarks. For instance, his criticism led to a surge of threats against Senators and Representatives who served in the military or intelligence. Democratic lawmakers have reported receiving hundreds of threats in just days.
The discourse has heated up not just among Democrats but also within Republican ranks. Trump has been vocal against fellow Republicans when they do not align with his agenda, leading to significant backlash. For example, after Indiana lawmakers failed to support a redistricting measure, many received threats, including swatting incidents—where fake emergency calls target individuals, endangering them and their families.
Experts like Pape warn that Trump’s inflammatory language can encourage threats and violence. “He routinely uses metaphors that lower the threshold for supporting violence against his targets,” he argued. This trend raises significant concerns about the health of American political discourse and the safety of those in public service.
As tensions rise, the stakes for political figures have never been higher. The changing narrative and increased threats against lawmakers reflect a growing challenge in American politics, where fear and violence can overshadow reasoned debate.
