New Delhi: Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday. This marks a surprising comeback after a turbulent period that included the January 2021 riots in Washington, D.C., and a felony conviction in May 2024 related to falsifying business records.
His Vice President, JD Vance, took the oath just before him. Right after the ceremony, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Trump, expressing hope for a fruitful partnership to benefit both nations.
Trump’s inauguration was notable for its smooth transition of power. His predecessor, Joe Biden, welcomed him back to the Capitol, saying, “Welcome home.” Biden’s warm greeting stood in stark contrast to the chaos that followed Trump’s last election loss four years ago. Many former presidents, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, were also in attendance.
Trump makes history as the first convicted felon to take the presidential office. He has vowed to pardon many involved in the January 6 riots. Shortly after being sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Trump proclaimed, “The ‘Golden Age of America’ begins now,” drawing cheers from his supporters.
He touched on his survival from an assassination attempt last year and stated that he was saved by a higher power to pursue his vision of making America great again.
On his first day, Trump promised to sign numerous executive orders focused on immigration and national security. He plans to impose stricter rules on immigration, including deporting illegal migrants and banning transgender athletes from women’s sports. Trump is also expected to declare a national emergency at the Mexico border and restart controversial policies that require asylum seekers to wait for their court hearings outside the U.S.
One significant issue he will tackle is ‘birthright citizenship’, which grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, a right protected by the 14th Amendment. Many view this potential change as unconstitutional.
Trump reinforced his “America first” policy, pledging to revise trade relationships to protect American workers and families. However, before imposing any tariffs, his administration will first assess trade dynamics with Canada, China, and Mexico. This shift has already impacted the dollar and caused a positive reaction in the stock markets.
He also plans to reinstate the death penalty, which had been suspended under the Biden administration. Trump’s agenda is expected to include around 100 executive orders, many aimed at reversing Biden’s policies, although these may face legal challenges.
Additionally, Trump intends to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement again, which he initially exited during his first term. The U.S. would then join countries like Iran and Libya in stepping back from global climate commitments. His decision aligns with his long-standing skepticism about climate change and supports his push to increase oil and gas production in the U.S.
Trump’s presidency is set to be contentious, with strong feelings from all sides about his actions and policies moving forward.
