The Department of Justice (DOJ) has decided to permanently scrap plans for a $1.8 billion fund intended to address concerns raised by President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed this during a House panel meeting.
Despite the fund’s cancellation, Trump and his family are still shielded from tax audits related to tax returns filed before last month’s settlement. Blanche, who has a history of representing Trump, signed an addendum to the settlement that offers this protection. He mentioned that the DOJ won’t be taking any action against Trump related to “Lawfare and/or Weaponization,” although he didn’t explain what these terms mean.
When asked about the fund, Blanche firmly stated, “We are not moving forward with the fund, period.” However, he later refrained from putting this promise in writing, sparking some skepticism among lawmakers.
This decision came in light of a federal judge blocking the fund while three lawsuits are in progress challenging its legitimacy. Critics, including some Republican senators, were wary of the fund due to concerns over its lack of oversight and its potential to compensate individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
During the session, Rep. Rosa DeLauro voiced her frustration, claiming the addendum might provide Trump and his family with tax immunity worth about $100 million. Blanche countered her claim, stating that the settlement isn’t about granting future immunity but is a standard part of IRS negotiations.
Sen. Bill Cassidy expressed doubts about whether the weaponization fund would truly be abandoned, indicating ongoing political tensions around this issue.
