The first meeting to prepare for the COP31 summit recently took place in Antalya, a beautiful Mediterranean city known for its diplomacy and tourism. Türkiye’s Environment Minister, Murat Kurum, emphasized that the summit’s leadership is vital. He believes countries will look to Türkiye for guidance in their fight against climate change.
The 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) is set for November 9-20, 2026. While most events will occur in Antalya, a significant leaders’ summit will be held in Istanbul. Türkiye secured this opportunity after a competitive bid against Australia at last year’s COP30 in Brazil.
During the preparatory meeting, Kurum and representatives from six ministries met to plan the summit. He visited the Antalya EXPO Fairgrounds, the event’s main site, and discussed logistics with local officials. Kurum noted that over 80,000 participants from 196 countries are expected to attend, showcasing Türkiye’s ability to host such major international events.
COP summits are held annually, allowing countries to discuss greenhouse gas reduction policies and climate funding. These meetings are crucial for shaping global climate agreements, like the Paris Agreement. The host country gains diplomatic visibility and is central to climate policy conversations.
At COP30, expectations were high for a clear plan to phase out fossil fuels. However, the final agreement lacked firm commitments, raising concerns among climate experts. Ümit Şahin, an expert at Sabancı University, pointed out that the absence of the U.S. at COP30 compromised its effectiveness. Despite these setbacks, he believes COP31 presents an opportunity for ambitious goals, especially regarding Mediterranean climate challenges such as wildfires and extreme heat.
Şahin also highlighted that Türkiye’s own climate policies will be closely scrutinized during the summit. To meet global climate goals, he stressed the importance of adhering to the country’s net-zero pledge by 2053 and committing to a coal phase-out timeline.
Preparing for a COP summit involves extensive logistics and organization. The host must ensure adequate infrastructure to accommodate more than 100,000 participants and secure the necessary safety and sustainability measures. This includes facilitating meaningful negotiations in a constructive environment.
As Türkiye gears up to host COP31, the country stands to gain increased international attention in areas like climate finance and clean energy. Successfully showcasing its climate strategies could position Türkiye as a leader in global climate diplomacy.
