Tuskegee University Enhances Campus Safety Measures Following Recent Tragic Shooting

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – After a tragic mass shooting on the Tuskegee University campus in November 2024, the university has made significant strides in enhancing safety measures. Nearly four months later, officials are pleased to announce that new security improvements are in place.

The university has installed new badge-activated entry arms at three gates, helping to control access to the campus. The Lincoln Gate is designated for students, visitors, tour buses, and school buses, while the Brimmer Gate will serve delivery and construction vehicles. Faculty and staff can enter through these gates or through the Franklin Road Gate.

These changes follow a promise from university President Dr. Mark A. Brown to ensure a secure environment for all students and their families. He emphasized the importance of controlling entry as a critical step toward the larger safety plan.

Visitors must still check in at the visitor center to receive a temporary pass. To streamline this process, an online form is available for those who wish to fill it out in advance.

Additionally, the university is expanding badge access to all campus buildings, tailored to the assigned roles of staff members and residential students. Notably, Olivia Davidson Hall and Lewis Adams Hall have already been equipped with key card access and security cameras. This standard will soon extend to all living areas on campus.

Dr. Brown also mentioned improvements in campus lighting. Enhanced lighting now illuminates areas like the baseball field, overflow parking, and tennis courts, making the campus safer during nighttime. Work with vendors and Alabama Power is ongoing to ensure even more permanent lighting is added.

More safety projects are planned for completion later this spring, underscoring the university’s commitment to creating a safer environment for everyone on campus.
