A couple from Thiruvananthapuram has found success by growing microgreens, which are tiny, nutrient-packed plants that many consider a superfood. Their journey began during the Covid-19 pandemic when they started cultivating these greens at home. As demand surged, they turned their hobby into a thriving business called "Forty X Leaves."
Suneshan and Shaikath, the couple behind this venture, operate from Mettamoode, Avalunnivilangathu Veettil. They chose the name "Forty X Leaves" because microgreens contain up to 40 times the nutrients of regular vegetables. Their setup consists of three shelves in a climate-controlled room, filled with trays of seeds and growing media.
Unlike traditional gardening, growing microgreens requires special conditions. Sunlight isn’t sufficient indoors, so they use LED lights for about ten hours a day. Shaikath emphasizes that the nutrient density comes from the seeds and the photosynthesis that takes place under artificial light.
The cultivation process takes about 12 to 14 days. They use a variety of seeds, including spinach, broccoli, and even wheat. Seeds can be sourced commercially from places like Bangalore or found online. The seeds are sown in coco peat, kept moist, and are ready to harvest within weeks.
Currently, they offer 15 different types of microgreens, including wheatgrass, which is known for its health benefits. Suneshan highlights wheatgrass juice mixed with lemon and honey as a remedy for various lifestyle diseases. Some notable varieties include Purple Radish, Amaranthus Red Garnet, and Italian Basil.
To effectively reach their customers, they use a subscription model. They cater to around 200 regular subscribers, providing various packages that support different health needs such as diabetes prevention and heart health. Subscribers receive 80 grams of microgreens weekly, with prices starting at ₹1,299 for a minimum six-week subscription.
Microgreens are celebrated as superfoods because they are packed with essential vitamins, including A, C, and K, along with minerals and antioxidants. Research shows that consuming just 20 grams daily can provide a significant nutritional boost. They are best enjoyed raw, in salads, or as a topping, as cooking can diminish their health benefits.
This growing trend is not just a local phenomenon. In recent years, the global microgreens market has expanded significantly, driven by increasing health consciousness. According to a 2021 report by ResearchAndMarkets, the microgreens market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.9%, reflecting a rising interest in health-based food choices.
By integrating a health-focused approach and a successful business model, Suneshan and Shaikath showcase how passion and innovation can create fruitful opportunities—even in challenging times.
