Twelve Baskets Food Pantry in Portage is gearing up to unveil its newly renovated community store. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as food insecurity is on the rise in the area.

The store will feature both new and gently used items, all priced at “garage sale” rates. From clothing and kitchen appliances to toys and movies, customers can expect discounts of 75% or more off retail prices, with many items available for just $1.

“If people can save on essentials, they can better afford rent and medicine,” said Executive Director Kathleen Fett. This approach not only addresses immediate needs but also supports the pantry’s ongoing growth and renovations by keeping prices affordable.

As grocery prices climb, the pantry has seen an increase in the families it serves. Right now, they assist 350 to 400 families weekly, making it one of the largest pantries in the region. Fett noted that with potential cuts to SNAP benefits looming, they expect demand to grow further.

“We anticipate our services will continue to increase,” Fett explained. “We want to be prepared for that.” In addition to the community store, they plan to host their annual Plant/Charity Garage Sale, featuring plants from local greenhouses along with donated furniture and tools.
