During a board meeting on Tuesday night, the Tyler County Board of Education made a significant decision. They voted 3-2 against renewing Superintendent Shane Highley’s contract.
After a lengthy closed session where they reviewed his performance, board members Diane Stender, Larry Thomas, and Andy Shreves chose not to continue Highley’s contract. In contrast, President Katrina Byers and Scott Strode expressed their support for him.
At the end of the meeting, both Byers and Strode announced their resignations, leaving the rest of the board silent on the matter.
In the wake of this decision, supporters of Highley are organizing a rally on Wednesday. This event will coincide with a school closure meeting focused on the new consolidated elementary school. It is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Tyler Consolidated High School.
This decision highlights the tensions in the board and the community’s commitment to supporting its superintendent.
