Tyrell Morris, the former leader of the Orleans Parish Communication District, has announced his intention to run for mayor of New Orleans this fall. This decision comes as he faces serious charges related to his conduct while in office.
The issues began when Morris failed to take a drug and alcohol test following a crash of his public vehicle on Elysian Fields Avenue. According to District Attorney Jason Williams, he allegedly attempted to cover up the incident by fabricating a policy and lying on insurance documents. As a result, Morris resigned from his position in 2023.
Despite the charges, Morris maintains his innocence. He feels a strong calling to serve the city and has been contemplating his mayoral run for the past two years. “I think I’m called to do this work,” he stated. Morris has spent his career in public service and believes he can make meaningful changes for New Orleans. During his time managing the city’s 911 and 311 services, he listened to residents about their concerns. He hopes to address these issues and restore pride in the city.
Morris will face tough competition. City Council Vice President Helena Moreno is currently leading the race, having launched her campaign in December with a strong network of supporters and nearly $1 million in funding. Former Criminal District Court Judge Arthur Hunter is also a candidate in the upcoming municipal election.
Morris described his campaign as a grassroots effort, starting from scratch with no financial backing at this point. “Zero. We’re starting fresh; we just opened a bank account today,” he explained.
