PARIS — The U.S. ambassador to France, Charles Kushner, recently faced a diplomatic challenge. After skipping an important meeting, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot criticized him, indicating that Kushner’s no-show would limit his ability to connect with French officials.
The meeting in question arose after comments from the Trump administration that upset French authorities. When Kushner didn’t attend, the foreign ministry summoned him for an explanation. Later, Kushner reached out to Barrot, and they agreed to meet soon to discuss their shared commitment to U.S.-France relations.
The tension began with a comment from the U.S. State Department regarding the death of a far-right activist in France. The activist, Quentin Deranque, was killed during clashes between far-left and far-right groups. In a statement, the State Department claimed that “violent radical leftism” contributed to Deranque’s death and shared this view on social media, which upset French officials.
Barrot reinforced that France does not tolerate foreign interference in its political matters. He expressed that Kushner’s actions could complicate his role as ambassador. “To perform effectively, an ambassador needs access to government officials,” Barrot noted. He emphasized that the relationship between France and the U.S. remains strong, unaffected by Kushner’s personal missteps.
It’s worth noting that these diplomatic tensions are not new. Last August, Paris summoned Kushner for comments he made alleging that France was not doing enough to combat antisemitism. At that time, Kushner sent a deputy rather than attending himself.
Recent polls show that people in both countries value the long-standing diplomatic ties, highlighting the importance of open communication. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, around 72% of Americans view France favorably, while 64% of the French hold positive views of the U.S.
Despite the current turmoil, both nations have a shared history that celebrates 250 years of friendship. As Barrot and Kushner meet in the coming days, this meeting could pave the way for a more collaborative relationship going forward.
