Freestyle skier Hunter Hess sparked controversy when he expressed his mixed feelings about competing for the U.S. due to the political climate at home. This prompted President Trump to label him a “real loser,” igniting a wave of support from his teammates who emphasized the importance of free speech.
Hess’s comments, which were meant to be personal, escalated into a public showdown. Athletes rallied around him, arguing that criticizing an athlete for sharing their honest thoughts contradicts the values of free expression that America champions.
Ben Ogden, a U.S. cross-country skier, was disappointed by the incident. Rich Ruohonen, a curler and lawyer from Minnesota, spoke out against immigration actions in his state while expressing pride in representing the U.S. He emphasized the fundamental right to free speech in the Constitution.
Even Utah Governor Spencer Cox chimed in, celebrating the athletes’ freedom to express their views. “Speaking your mind makes us better as a nation,” he noted, advocating for unity.
This clash between sport and politics isn’t new. In the past, Olympic athletes like Muhammad Ali and Tommie Smith have faced backlash for their political statements. Today’s athletes are navigating a similar landscape, realizing that their platforms can spark meaningful discussions.
According to a recent poll by Pew Research, over 70% of Americans believe that athletes should be allowed to express their views on social issues, indicating strong support for the athletes’ freedom to speak out.
