FLORENCE, Ala. (February 17, 2026) – The University of North Alabama baseball team faced a tough loss against UAB, with a final score of 15-3 at Mike D. Lane Field. This was their first midweek matchup of the season.
Despite the loss, North Alabama put up a good fight, scoring three runs in the second inning. Senior left fielder Nash Rippen launched a powerful two-run homer, hitting the ball 354 feet over the left field wall. Redshirt freshman right fielder Cayden Sheffield got things started with a fielding error from UAB’s shortstop. Center fielder Tait Nunnally followed up with a timely single, driving in Jackson Westmoreland to tie the game at 3-3.
On the pitching side, redshirt junior Kevin Henrich shined during his season debut, recording three strikeouts in a scoreless fourth inning. However, UAB maintained their momentum, scoring in every inning except the second and fourth.
As the teams moved forward, it’s interesting to note the shift in college baseball dynamics. In the past, teams like North Alabama struggled to compete with larger programs. However, recent statistics indicate that smaller colleges are closing the gap. A survey by the NCAA shows that participation in college baseball has increased by 10% over the last five years, with more players emerging from diverse backgrounds.
Looking ahead, North Alabama will host Murray State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Fans are eager to see how the team responds after this setback. The community’s support is palpable, with chatter on social media showcasing the excitement and loyalty of the fans.
