JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amidst rising tensions with Iran, according to his office. However, the UAE later denied this visit took place.
Netanyahu reportedly met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which was seen as a significant step in their diplomatic relationship. Notably, the UAE established normal ties with Israel back in 2020, under the Abraham Accords.
In response, the UAE’s official news agency, WAM, published a statement dismissing any claims of a secret meeting. They emphasized that their relations with Israel are open and official, contrasting them with any unofficial dealings.
The announcement from Israel coincided with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee sharing that Israel had sent Iron Dome air-defense systems to the UAE. This move comes as the UAE continues to face threats from Iranian missiles and drones, even after a recent ceasefire.
The recent warning from Iran includes military accusations toward Kuwait, claiming that the Gulf state is trying to “sow discord.” Iran’s Foreign Minister urged the immediate release of four detained Iranians accused of spying, hinting at further unrest.
Meanwhile, Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was released from prison after over a month, following her arrest for activism. Sotoudeh, known for defending women’s rights and political dissidents, was released on bail from Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison.
In another significant development, Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi, who collapsed in prison, has also been transferred to a hospital. Doctors have recommended several months of care for her deteriorating health. She has been incarcerated multiple times and continues to be a prominent voice for human rights even while facing harsh realities.
These recent incidents underline the shifting dynamics in the Middle East, where relations are complex and often fraught with tension. As the region grapples with both internal and external pressures, the quest for stability remains delicate and ongoing.
