STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team saw their impressive 11-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night, losing 7-6 to the Providence Friars. With this loss, their record stands at 12-4 in BIG EAST play and 21-23 overall this season.
Freshman pitcher Caprice Bohmer started the game for UConn, going 5.1 innings. She gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out three batters. Providence made an early statement with two home runs in the first two innings—a two-run shot in the first and a three-run homer in the second—putting UConn behind, 5-0.
Despite the rough start, Bohmer found her rhythm. She held Providence scoreless for three innings, allowing UConn to regroup. The Huskies began to chip away at the lead when Kaitlyn Kibling earned a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, making it 5-1.
Emma Willers kept the momentum going with a clutch two-out single in the fifth, scoring Cat Petteys and closing the gap to 5-2. However, Providence responded with another run in the sixth, extending their lead to 6-2.
Sophomore Amber Bretton replaced Bohmer in the sixth and pitched effectively, allowing one run in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. UConn wasn’t ready to give up. Cat Petteys crushed a three-run homer in the sixth, bringing the score to 6-5.
Providence scored one more insurance run in the seventh, making it 7-5. The Huskies rallied in the bottom of the seventh, with Willers and Ava Calciano working walks to put two runners on base. Down to their last strike, Kibling singled to the right field line, scoring Calciano, but UConn couldn’t capitalize further, ending their comeback attempt.
