Hey everyone,
I’m excited to share that Chief Gene Labonte has been appointed as the new Associate Vice President for University Safety at UConn. He has been our Chief of Police since July 2023, and now he’ll take on both roles.
Those who know Chief Labonte recognize his dedication. His leadership is characterized by integrity and professionalism. With decades of law enforcement experience, he understands the complexities of overseeing a police department at a large research university like UConn.
One of Gene’s key strengths is his ability to view public safety broadly, not just through the law enforcement perspective. This comprehensive viewpoint will serve both his roles effectively.
His open and transparent communication style is appreciated by his colleagues across the university. Before joining UConn, Gene was the Chief of Police and Associate Vice President for Public Safety at Salem State University in Massachusetts. He started his law enforcement career in 1990 with the Connecticut State Police, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He takes over from Hans Rhynhart, who is retiring after more than 30 years at UConn, during which he moved from officer to Chief and eventually AVP for University Safety. Hans’s last day will be June 30.
I want to extend my gratitude to the search committee, led by Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Jeffrey Hines, and to everyone involved in the process. Your efforts led to this important decision.
Please join me in congratulating Chief Labonte on his new role, and let’s wish Hans all the best in his well-deserved retirement.
Best,
Radenka Maric,
UConn President
