The University of Connecticut (UConn) has made strides in its climate goals, earning recognition at the Connecticut GreenerGov Awards. This aligns with UConn’s ambition to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2040.
Recently, UConn was honored by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection along with other agencies for its achievements in sustainability during the fiscal year 2024:
- Sustainability Achievement Award: UConn leads the state with 58 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, aiding the shift to cleaner transportation.
- Trailblazer Award: UConn Health has dramatically reduced its use of harmful anesthesia gases that warm the atmosphere significantly more than CO₂.
- Eco Champion Award: Seven staff members were celebrated for their efforts in the EcoMadness competition, which encourages students to save energy and reduce waste.
UConn also earned praise for a water-saving project at UConn Health, expected to save 25,000 CCF of natural gas each year, and for cutting overall energy use by 3% from FY 2023 to FY 2024.
EcoMadness is a fun competition where residence halls challenge each other in sustainability. In 2023, one hall decreased electricity use by over 30%, while another cut water use by nearly 30%. The winning halls received treats from UConn’s Dairy Bar as a reward!
This initiative is part of a broader push in Connecticut, following Governor Ned Lamont’s 2019 Executive Order directing state agencies to lower energy use, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions. This effort has made Connecticut a frontrunner in merging cost-saving measures with clear climate action.
UConn’s progress reflects a growing trend in higher education. Universities across the country are boosting EV infrastructure and engaging students in sustainability efforts. According to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, many institutions have recorded up to a 5% reduction in energy use annually when combining physical upgrades with behavioral changes.
