INDIANAPOLIS — UConn guard Caroline Ducharme is back on the court after a long 15-month recovery from a head injury. Her big return happened during the Huskies’ impressive 86-47 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the crowd was buzzing for Butler women’s basketball’s first sellout game.
“It’s been a long wait,” said UConn coach Geno Auriemma. “She’s faced a lot, and everyone was thrilled to see her back.” As Caroline sprinted onto the court, pulling on her headband, the crowd erupted in cheers and her teammates celebrated with hugs.
After the game, Ducharme didn’t speak to the media because so many fans were waiting for a glimpse of star player Paige Bueckers. Auriemma slipped in through a back door for the press conference instead.
For Ducharme, this game marked a monumental step in her journey. Over the past three seasons, she struggled with head injuries. She sat out five games during UConn’s national runner-up finish in 2021-22 and only played 23 games in the next season. Last year, after winning her starting spot, she had to step away just four games in. She worked hard for 2½ months to return, but the team ultimately decided to end her season in January due to ongoing challenges. Ducharme described that time as frustrating, with many ups and downs, but emphasized her commitment to her recovery.
This season, her teammates have done incredibly well, with a record of 25-3. They’re close to clinching another Big East regular-season title, which they can secure with a win against No. 23 Creighton this Thursday.
On Saturday, although Ducharme only played for two minutes and recorded one rebound with no points, it was a moment of hope. Her return adds depth to a strong team, gearing up for the final regular-season games and the exciting Big East Tournament ahead.
