The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa men’s volleyball team just made history! They secured their first-ever home win in the NCAA Championship, taking down the University of Southern California (USC) and earning a spot in the National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship semifinals.
On May 2, the Rainbow Warriors fought hard, winning the intense match 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 32-30 at Bankoh Arena. This victory marks a significant moment for the team, as they advanced to the Final Four for the fifth time in six seasons, a testament to their consistent performance.
Kris Titriyski led the charge with an impressive 19 kills in his first NCAA tournament match. His teammate, Adrien Roure, shone brightly too, scoring 13 kills and a remarkable seven aces, setting a new NCAA Championship record for aces in a four-set match. Other key players included Louis Sakanoko and Trevell Jordan, who combined for 20 kills, showcasing the team’s depth and skill.
Setter Tread Rosenthal, who was named Big West Player of the Year, played a crucial role, providing 56 assists. The Warriors finished hitting .328, slightly above USC’s .294, which made a difference in securing their win.
The Rainbow Warriors will face Long Beach State in the semifinals on May 9 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. This matchup is particularly exciting because Long Beach won a close five-set battle against Hawaiʻi in the Big West Championship final last month. However, the Rainbow Warriors did sweep the regular season games against them earlier in March, giving them confidence going into this rematch.
