The University of Houston is speeding up its Campus Lighting and Security Enhancement Project. The Board of Regents has okayed a quicker timeline for Phase Two of this $18 million effort, aiming to boost safety on campus.
The focus is on priority student housing lots, which should be wrapped up by November 2025. Other parking areas will follow, with completion planned for December 2025.
“Safety is a top priority at the University of Houston,” said Raymond Bartlett, the senior vice president of administration and finance. “With this faster schedule, we can make critical upgrades like better lighting, more cameras, and emergency call stations sooner.”
By approving a larger budget, the university can continue work without waiting for a new contractor. This helps speed up the process using the contractor already in place.
Here’s a quick look at the timeline:
Priority student housing lots:
- Lots 3A, 3B, 4A, 6A – Completion by November 2025
Additional lots:
- Lots 12A, 15H, 16B/C/D/E/F, 21A/B – Completion by December 2025
This project aims to boost safety across the entire campus. Once complete, it will include:
- Over 400 new light fixtures
- 195 security cameras
- 42 emergency call stations and security kiosks
The first phase, focusing on residential areas and parking lots, is almost finished. Now, with this new acceleration, Phase Two will upgrade more student housing areas and other main lots around campus. The project involved a thorough safety assessment of the parking areas to determine what type of lighting is needed, converting to LED for better visibility and safety.
“By fast-tracking Phase Two, we are meeting urgent needs and showing our dedication to safety,” Bartlett noted. “This project is key to creating a secure environment for everyone.”
Looking ahead, the university plans further lighting upgrades that will tie into its Centennial Master Plan. This plan aims to improve the campus with new spaces like the Centennial Plaza and a redesigned University Drive.
