NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) – Just six months after opening, the University of Iowa Health Care’s North Liberty campus is attracting more patients than anticipated. This surge has prompted the need for future expansion.
Patient Larry Brislawn shared how the new hospital’s location made a big difference for him. “It just felt comfortable,” he said. The campus is conveniently situated right off the interstate, making it easier to reach compared to the main hospital in Iowa City. He noted that parking and access can be tricky at the larger facility.
Since its launch, the North Liberty hospital has catered to patients from over 500 communities across 26 states, highlighting its broad reach. To support this growth, the hospital has worked hard to build a strong team. Emily Ward, Associate Chief Nursing Officer at UIHC, mentioned they’ve been lucky with recruitment, despite the broader challenges in the healthcare sector. “We’ve filled almost all our positions,” she explained, emphasizing the positive team culture they’ve nurtured.
The North Liberty site now hosts UIHC’s Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, increasing capacity for the entire healthcare system. Ward noted that patient numbers in the operating room have already surpassed expectations. “It’s exciting to know we’re providing great care to many patients,” she said, adding that plans to expand their services and operating rooms are already in motion. This will enhance accessibility for patients throughout eastern Iowa and beyond.
Recent statistics show that many healthcare facilities are struggling with staffing. However, UI Health Care’s successful recruitment sets a positive example. Data from a recent survey indicated that 79% of healthcare organizations reported difficulty in hiring, highlighting the achievement of North Liberty’s campus.
As the demand for healthcare rises, initiatives like this are vital. They not only improve patient care but also contribute to regional health stability. The North Liberty hospital is quickly becoming a key player in community health.
