LONDON (AP) — A wave of unrest is brewing within the Labour Party as some members openly challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer. On Thursday, Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from his Cabinet position, signaling a potential bid for leadership. He expressed a lack of confidence in Starmer and suggested it’s time to consider new voices within the party.
In Streeting’s resignation letter, he acknowledged Starmer’s international leadership but criticized a lack of clear vision for the party. “We have a vacuum where there should be inspiration,” he stated. However, he didn’t declare himself as the next leader but hinted that a broader debate about the party’s future is needed.
Starmer’s leadership is under intense scrutiny after disappointing results in recent local elections. Many in the party are questioning his judgment and direction since he led Labour back into power in July 2024 after a lengthy period out of office.
In response to Streeting’s resignation, Starmer expressed regret but focused on their shared goals of addressing pressing issues like the cost of living crisis. He believes that leadership challenges could destabilize the government’s focus on these challenges.
As for the possibility of a leadership contest, any challenger must gather support from at least one-fifth of Labour lawmakers. Speculation surrounds whether Streeting has secured enough backing for a challenge or if he is waiting for Starmer to resign voluntarily.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner also hinted at a potential run for leadership, stating that she is ready to step in if needed. Additionally, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham could join the race if he secures a parliamentary seat in an upcoming special election.
Despite the growing internal conflict, there was some positive news for the government. Recent data showed that the UK economy grew by 0.6% in the first quarter of the year, exceeding expectations despite challenges, including the war in Iran. Treasury chief Rachel Reeves emphasized that stability is crucial during such turbulent times.
Streeting has been making strides in improving NHS service wait times, reporting a decrease for five consecutive months. His successes may bolster his credibility should he decide to run for leader. Meanwhile, Rayner appeals to party members who seek a return to Labour’s working-class foundations.
Historically, Labour has been less prone to ousting their leaders midterm compared to the Conservative Party, which often acts swiftly in such matters. According to Jonathan Tonge, a politics professor at the University of Liverpool, Labour’s internal dynamics tend to produce softer approaches to leadership challenges.
As the situation evolves, Starmer’s leadership may hang in the balance, reflecting both the current state of British politics and the growing discontent among party members.
