Liudmyla Shestakova has endured unimaginable loss due to the war. She lost her son and his wife on the front lines. Living in central Ukraine, she remains realistic about her country’s situation. After President Trump suggested a mining deal that could benefit both Ukraine and the U.S., she felt hope for investment in her region.
At 65, Liudmyla works with an environmental group called Flora in Kropyvnytskyi. She believed this partnership could bring financial support to her local economy. However, she was taken aback when the deal fell through and felt disappointed by how President Trump treated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. She felt it was disrespectful.
“This could have been a win-win situation with a reliable partner,” she shared. “But with someone like Trump, it could become risky for us.”
Many in Ukraine shared her shock and disappointment. Despite this setback, they expressed determination to continue fighting for their country. Iryna Tsilyk, a 42-year-old poet and filmmaker in Kyiv, stated, “It won’t be easy, but we will endure. I am proud of my president and my country today, even if I can’t say the same about the Americans.”
While the situation is tough, the spirit of resilience runs deep among the people of Ukraine. They remain committed to their fight, no matter the obstacles ahead.
