A serving of six medium oysters gives you all the vitamin B12, copper, omega-3s, and zinc you need for the day. While people used to think oysters were only good in months with an “R,” modern farming and refrigeration have changed that. Still, oysters tend to taste sweeter and bigger in the fall and winter because of their spawning cycle.
Oyster festivals are popular in the fall, bringing food lovers together to celebrate this seafood delight. Here are some of the most exciting oyster events coming up.
Wellfleet OysterFest, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
On October 18-19, the Wellfleet OysterFest transforms Cape Cod into a cozy haven. While the summer crowds fade, you can enjoy live music, local arts, and over 40 food vendors. A highlight is the Shuck-Off competition, the largest oyster shucking contest in the U.S. Families can enjoy games while culinary demos teach cooking tips.
Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, Maui
Although Hawaii isn’t famous for oysters, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival has been serving up food for 15 years. From October 24-26, you can enjoy a special Southern Seafood Sunday. Chef Alex Kim will showcase his unique oyster dish at the VIP oyster bar, inspired by childhood memories of eating oysters with his grandmother in South Korea.
OysterFest in Shelton, Washington
On October 4-5, Shelton hosts the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championship, along with more than 40 food vendors and family-friendly activities. It’s just a 90-minute drive from Seattle, making it a perfect day trip destination. Afterward, you can explore the stunning landscapes of Olympic National Park, home to the Hoh Rainforest.
US Oyster Festival, Leonardtown, Maryland
Celebrating its 59th year on October 18-19, the US Oyster Festival features over 100 vendors along with the National Oyster Shucking Championship. The winner will get a chance to compete in Ireland. It’s just a short drive from Washington, D.C., making it a great weekend trip.
NC Oyster Festival, Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina
Taking place October 18-19, this festival pairs local music and artisans with delicious food. The pleasant October weather makes it perfect for outdoor fun. Just 45 minutes from Myrtle Beach, it offers plenty of sightseeing options.
Tofino Oyster Festival, British Columbia
Scheduled for November 21-23, this festival takes an upscale twist on the traditional oyster event. Expect creative dishes and even a mermaid costume ball. Tofino is known for its beautiful cabins and outdoor activities, making it a great place to enjoy nature alongside festival fun.
While the idea of eating oysters in months with an “R” is outdated, fall remains the best time to savor sweet, fresh oysters. With festivals around North America, there’s ample opportunity to enjoy this culinary delight and celebrate with fellow food lovers.
