UMass Field Hockey Dominates Boston University with a Commanding 4-0 Victory!

The No. 14 Massachusetts field hockey team triumphed over Boston University with a solid 4-0 win, tying their season record at 4-0. Playing at home, UMass has not lost since the previous year, showcasing their strength on familiar turf.

Head coach Barb Weinberg praised the team, stating, “I thought it was a good win for us. We definitely converted when we needed to.” She highlighted the need to tighten their play moving forward, acknowledging some moments of sloppiness during the game.

Freshman Emily Barrett shone in this match, scoring twice. Barrett opened and closed the scoring, cementing her position as the team’s top scorer early in the season. She’s shown remarkable talent, reaching this scoring milestone already twice in just three games. Her first goal came from a well-placed pass by Fiene Jenniskens, who made a smart play to bypass BU’s defense and find the net.

“[Barrett is] such a natural goal scorer,” Weinberg commented. After facing challenges in a prior game, Barrett truly made an impact this time around.

UMass had nine penalty corners, converting two, while they successfully defended against all six of BU’s attempts. Barrett’s second goal was also off a corner, helped by Jenniskens and Megan Carpenter.

Neva Eisenga increased the lead to 2-0 just before halftime, scoring off a penalty corner. Her strong play this season has led her to score in three of four games, the most on the team.

Weinberg noted how crucial scoring before halftime can be, saying, “If the score is still 0-0, a sport could go either way.” That added pressure can change game dynamics significantly.

Jenniskens stood out with three assists, showcasing her playmaking skills. Together with Barrett, this young duo is proving their abilities early in the season. UMass goaltender Myrte van Herwijnen recorded her third shutout, making seven saves and ensuring the team’s unbeaten streak continues.

“It’s great,” Weinberg expressed, reflecting on their strong opening run compared to last season, where they started 0-2. She stressed the importance of learning from their wins to keep improving.

The Minutewomen will face their toughest challenge next against No. 8 Boston College. Scheduled for September 12, this game is expected to be a true test of their skills. Weinberg mentioned the need for the team to “clean up our connections,” striving to minimize unforced errors as they prepare.

As the season unfolds, UMass fans are eager to see if the team can maintain their momentum and continue to grow.
