Ypsilanti, Mich. – The University of Massachusetts rowing team made a big splash at the inaugural Mid-American Conference (MAC) rowing Championship on Saturday at Ford Lake. They dominated the competition, winning all key races: Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Third Varsity 8, and Second Varsity 4. This victory not only secured them the championship title but also a spot at the NCAA Championship in May.
With an impressive 48 points overall, UMass outperformed teams like Delaware, Temple, and Eastern Michigan. This championship marks their first since 2017 and the 17th in their program’s history.
The day was filled with excitement and some unexpected twists. A lightning delay meant that the race order had to be changed. This didn’t faze the UMass Varsity 8, which kicked off the event with a strong performance, finishing in 6:37.5—just ahead of Temple’s 6:40.8.
Next, the Second Varsity 8 shone brightly with a time of 6:49.2, pulling ahead in the latter half of the race. After another weather delay, the Varsity 4 took control and led for the entire race, finishing in 7:25.7.
The Third Varsity 8 had a nail-biting finish, managing to edge out Eastern Michigan to secure another UMass win with a time of 6:57.0. The Second Varsity 4 rounded off the day with yet another first-place finish.
