UMBC Volleyball Stages Epic Comeback: Overcomes 2-0 Deficit to Defeat Bryant!

BALTIMORE — The UMBC Volleyball team faced a thrilling challenge against Bryant on Sunday. They lost the first two sets and were trailing 24-22 in the third. But then, something remarkable happened. The team rallied and managed to turn the game around, winning the match in five sets (15-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-4).

Once they secured the third set, they gained momentum. In the fifth set, they scored the first 11 points, dominating the game.

Jalynn Brown stood out with a remarkable 18 kills and 11 digs. Claudia Llamas also made a strong contribution with 13 kills, six blocks, and four digs. Jada James joined in with a solid performance, achieving a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs after coming off the bench.

Laura Fuehrer recorded nine blocks and five kills, marking the fourth time this season she has reached at least nine blocks. Izzy Ostvig provided 21 assists and 12 digs, while her teammate Serin Maden had 27 assists and four aces. Maden played a key role during the crucial 11-point streak in the fifth set.

Hannah Howard added 21 digs to the team’s efforts, and Helen Frankovich contributed four kills and four blocks with impressive hitting.

Next up, UMBC will play at Howard on Wednesday. They will also head to New Hampshire for another game on Sunday.

In the world of sports, resilience often leads to success. This match is a reminder that teams can bounce back, no matter how dire the situation seems. As veteran coach John Wooden famously said, “Success is never final; failure is never fatal.” This seems to hold true for the Retrievers as they continue their season.
