The University of Minnesota Duluth’s softball team recently improved its record to 6-4. They secured their first shutout of the season with a solid 7-0 win over Roosevelt University but faced a setback, losing 6-2 to Ferris State University.
In the game against Roosevelt, the Bulldogs jumped ahead early. Daphne Evans and Morgan McMillan got on base, setting the stage for Evans to score after a passed ball. Khendal Jenkins then brought in McMillan with a sacrifice fly, giving UMD a quick 2-0 lead.
The second inning saw the Bulldogs extend their advantage to 5-0. Ava Johnson’s double and Lauren Jenkins’ single started the rally. Noelle Krumrie added another single, and Sierra Thomas closed it with a double. Evans and Thomas continued to contribute, bringing in two more runs in the fourth. Pitcher Emmie Sylvie-Cochran was impressive, striking out 15 batters and limiting Roosevelt to just two hits.
However, the game against Ferris State took a different turn. UMD initially led after Evans’ double allowed Thomas to score. But Ferris State quickly regained control, scoring three runs off Allysa Williams. The Bulldogs struggled to keep up, managing only one more run in the fourth inning. By then, Ferris had already added two more runs, leading to the Bulldogs’ fourth loss of the season.
Sylvie-Cochran now boasts a perfect 3-0 record, while Williams fell to 3-2 after the game against Ferris. Looking ahead, UMD will face Truman State University next at 6:00 PM, followed by Wayne State University at 8:00 PM.
