The UN General Assembly recently passed a resolution backed by European countries, demanding that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine. This decision comes as Ukraine marks three years since the outset of the invasion by Russia. In contrast, a US-backed resolution aimed at ending the conflict, without directly addressing Russia’s role, was rejected. This situation points to the ongoing tensions and differing opinions within the international community.
Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa, emphasized the country’s right to defend itself against Russia’s aggression. Betsa stated the importance of international support for Ukraine, urging nations to stand for the principles of the UN Charter, particularly regarding national sovereignty.
Interestingly, support for Ukraine seems to be declining. Only 93 countries supported the recent resolution, while 18 voted against it and 65 chose to abstain. Among those abstaining was India, which had also refrained from past votes condemning Russia.
The US resolution, rejected in this round, focused on the ongoing humanitarian crisis without explicitly naming Russia as the aggressor. It acknowledged the loss of life in the conflict and called for peace but lacked specifics about responsibility for the war.
The Ukrainian resolution, however, was more direct. It condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion and reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity. It specifically called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces and emphasized the need for a lasting peace, aligning with previous UN General Assembly resolutions against Russia’s actions.
This latest assembly meeting highlighted the complexities of international diplomacy surrounding the Ukraine crisis and showcased the divided opinions on how best to address the ongoing conflict.
