This report involved nearly 300 scientists from over 80 countries and suggests that we need to invest around $8 trillion each year from now until 2050 to meet climate goals. However, it warns that failing to act will incur even greater costs.
If we continue relying on fossil fuels and damaging natural resources, the consequences could be severe. The GEO estimates that without action, climate change could slice 4% off the global GDP by 2050, causing loss of life and forcing migration. Warning signs include potential dieback of the Amazon rainforest and increased food scarcity, with air pollution predicted to lead to an additional 4 million premature deaths every year.
To make a real impact, the report urges a swift transition away from fossil fuels and a reevaluation of agricultural subsidies that promote environmentally harmful practices.
Robert Watson, a co-chair of the GEO assessment, emphasized that the climate crisis isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s affecting our economy, food security, and health and is igniting conflicts globally.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Watson highlighted how the U.S. administration under Trump reportedly downplayed the findings of the report. He mentioned that their absence from key meetings and disagreement with the document’s conclusions hindered an honest dialogue about climate change.
