Three brothers made a surprising find while cleaning their late mother’s attic in California: one of the first Superman comics. Nestled among old newspapers, this original copy from June 1939 was in excellent condition. It recently sold for a staggering $9.12 million at auction, making it the highest-priced comic ever sold.
Heritage Auctions hosted the sale and called it the “pinnacle of comic collecting.” The brothers discovered six comic books, including Superman #1, after sifting through a dusty cardboard box. They weren’t aware of the true value until they sought help from an auction house. Lon Allen from Heritage Auctions visited them soon after they reached out. He noted that their mother had mentioned an impressive comic collection over the years but never shared the details.
The comics were preserved since the brothers’ mother and her brother bought them between the Great Depression and World War II. The cool climate of Northern California helped keep the comics in such good shape. As Allen pointed out, a similar find in Texas wouldn’t have fared as well due to the heat and humidity.
The Superman #1 comic received a rare 9.0 grading from CGC, a classification service for comics. This score surpassed the previous top grade of 8.5, making it even more valuable. The auction price outstripped the previous record of $6 million set by Action Comics No. 1, which introduced Superman to the world in 1938.
The youngest brother reflected on their discovery, emphasizing that it’s more than just a comic book. It’s about family, memories, and how the past can unexpectedly return to us.

A recent survey indicated that collectors are willing to spend significantly on rare editions, demonstrating a wider trend in the collectibles market.
