Osman Gurcu, a 43-year-old from Turkey, just made history by throwing an axe an incredible distance of 183 feet and 8.72 inches. This impressive feat broke the previous record of 143 feet held by Jesse Rood from the U.S. To put that into perspective, Osman’s throw is longer than an Olympic swimming pool, which measures 164 feet. This achievement is Osman’s eighth title with Guinness World Records.
Osman, a dad of two, keeps a close eye on the Guinness World Records website and social media for new challenges. He dreams of seeing his name in their annual book one day. “Breaking the record felt amazing. The distance is challenging, and the axe has to stick in the target,” he shared. He faced many tries where the axe didn’t stick, but he persevered.
Although he could not train as much as he wanted due to the cold and wet weather, Osman believes throwing is a talent he’s had since childhood. As he was preparing for this throw, someone else broke the record, making his goal even harder to reach. But that didn’t stop him.
Looking ahead, Osman is already thinking about new records. He plans to aim for a bullseye dart record from a distance and pursue a series of basketball shooting records as well. “Being a record holder makes me very happy,” he said, filled with determination for what comes next.
